1. Physical properties of gray iron castings

The density of gray iron castings depends on the relative amount of each component in its structure, and it is greatly affected by the carbon content and graphite content. The density of gray iron castings of different sizes is between 6..95~7.35g/cm3. The specific heat melting of gray iron castings is related to the composition and heating temperature. Its linear expansion coefficient is mainly related to the temperature range, while the amount of carbon, silicon, manganese, phosphorus, and sulfur within the usual range has little effect.

2. Use performance

Abrasion resistance, damping type, heat fatigue resistance, oxidation resistance, growth resistance, compactness

3. Process performance

1Casting performance

The quality of casting performance is an important aspect to measure the pros and cons of casting alloys. Compared with other casting alloys, gray iron castings have better casting performance due to the narrower solidification temperature range and lower melting temperature. This is one of the main reasons why gray iron castings are widely used.

2 Cutting performance

Gray iron castings have good chipping performance due to the lubrication and chip breaking effect of flake graphite on the cutting tool. The chip performance of gray iron castings depends on the matrix structure and hardness. The ferrite matrix is good, followed by the pearlite matrix. When there is free cementite, the chip performance drops sharply. The ratio of tensile strength to hardness is commonly used in production to control chip performance. When increasing the strength, it is desirable to obtain a lower hardness in order to maintain good chip performance.

3 Welding repair performance

Due to the presence of graphite in cast iron and the duality of iron-carbon alloys in the cooling and crystallization process, the welding repair performance of cast iron is worse than that of steel. The welding repair performance of gray iron castings is better than that of ductile iron. Cold welding (electric welding) is used to repair unimportant small parts or surface defects that are no longer processed after welding. At this time, Ni series, Fe-Ni series and Cu-Ni series electrodes are used.
