Casting is a forming method in which molten metal liquid is poured into a mold similar to the shape of the part, and after cooling and solidification, a blank or part with a certain shape and performance is obtained.

 

1. Casting and its characteristics

Castings are generally blanks, which need to be cut before they can become parts. Parts with lower precision requirements and larger surface roughness parameter values, or castings produced by special casting methods can also be used directly.

 

2. There are many casting production methods, and there are two common types:

a. Sand casting: a casting method in which molding sand is used to form compactly. The source of molding sand is wide, the price is low, and the sand casting method is adaptable, so it is the most basic casting method used in production at present.

b. Special casting: other casting methods different from sand casting, such as investment casting, metal mold casting, pressure casting, low pressure casting and centrifugal casting.

3. Casting production has the following advantages:

a. Can be made into blanks with very complex shapes and cavities. Such as various boxes, beds, racks, etc.

b. Wide application range. It can cast workpieces of different sizes, weights and shapes; it is also suitable for different materials, such as cast iron, cast steel, and non-ferrous alloys. The weight of castings can range from a few grams to more than 200 tons.

c. Wide sources of raw materials. Scrap parts or chips can also be used; the cost of process equipment is small and the cost is low.

d. The size of the obtained casting is close to that of the part. It can save metal consumption and reduce the workload of cutting.

 

However, castings also have disadvantages such as poor mechanical properties, many production processes, unstable quality, and poor working conditions of workers. With the development of casting alloys and casting technology, especially the development of precision casting and the successful application of new casting alloys, the surface quality and mechanical properties of castings have been significantly improved, and the scope of application of castings has been expanding.
